Looking blue?

Dermal fillers are a popular solution for under-eye bags, smoothing and “filling in” thinning skin without surgery. However, the rise in demand has led to more unqualified providers offering these injections. As a result, many patients are experiencing a common side effect of poor technique—the Tyndall effect.

In this month’s post, we’ll explain what the Tyndall effect is and how to avoid it, ensuring beautiful under-eye filler results.

What is the Tyndall Effect?

The Tyndall effect happens when light is scattered by particles, causing a bluish tint in the skin. This is most noticeable under the eyes, where the skin is thinner. In aesthetics, it refers to the bluish hue that appears when fillers are injected too close to the surface. The particles in the filler reflect light, creating this discoloration.

What causes the Tyndall effect?

There are a few factors that can cause the Tyndall effect:

  • Filler is injected too close to the skin’s surface
  • Filler is injected in too large of a dose
  • Incorrect filler is used

The Tyndall effect can look like a bruise but won’t fade on its own. The area may appear raised or lumpy due to shallow filler placement, making the bluish tint noticeable and sometimes frustrating. If untreated, it can last for months or even years.

How to Avoid the Tyndall Effect?

Some fillers, like hyaluronic acid (HA), are popular for under-eyes but can cause the Tyndall effect due to their fine particles. Choosing the right type and technique is essential.

  1. Use RHA Fillers
RHA® fillers, made from Resilient Hyaluronic Acid, carry no Tyndall risk, blend naturally, last up to 15 months, and are FDA-approved for dynamic lines.
  2. Consider Fat Transfer
Fat transfer uses fat from areas like the hips to add volume under the eyes, offering long-lasting results without the Tyndall effect.

If you’re not pleased with your filler results, don’t worry—HA and RHA fillers can be easily dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. This enzyme usually removes fillers within 24 hours, though a second session may sometimes be needed. If you’d like to correct your under-eye fillers, our skilled aesthetics team can dissolve the old filler and provide a fresh treatment.
